Senior Staff Engineer- GNC (Guidance, Navigation, and Control)
 

Responsibilities and Duties

Robotics engineers at Near Earth develop, refine and deploy perception, motion planning, navigation, guidance, control system, localization, and/or calibration algorithms and integrate these onto aircraft ranging from small drones to full size helicopters for aerial mobility applications. Senior Staff engineers provide technical leadership to guide projects through the complete lifecycle from conception through production, whether through leading teams or through subject matter expertise.
We are looking for candidates who are highly motivated, independent thinkers, passionate about state-of-the-art technology; also self-starting, empathetic team players, and strong communicators. The ideal candidate for this position can multitask effectively, is comfortable working on a quick development tempo, and most importantly enjoys bringing new autonomy technology to life. 

Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Computer Science  or equivalent
  • 8+ years’ industry experience in robotics or autonomous flight domains
  • Expertise or specialization in guidance, navigation, control systems, or motion planning 
  • Working knowledge of drones or aircraft systems, suitable for easily integrating new software and diagnosing problems
  • Strong C++ design and programming skills
  • Familiarity with software engineering practices and software development life cycle
  • Due to the nature of Near Earth’s funding, this position requires US citizenship or Permanent Resident status.

Preferred Additional Skills

  • Masters or PhD in applicable degree area
  • Experience with ROS or ROS2
  • Experience with field testing of vehicle systems
  • Experience with uncrewed aircraft or aviation more broadly
  • Experience designing modular, testable, and extensible C++ APIs 
  • Experience with Matlab, Simulink or similar system modeling software
  • Experience leading teams and/or mentoring engineers
  • Proven ability to lead technical development on a project within schedule and budget constraints
  • Familiarity with development in a Linux environment
